We were in Boston for five days and have been in RI for three. We are here until Monday, Feb. 5. It is really a difficult time for the family and for Sheilah. I mean, how would you like for someone to tell you your life was going to be over in about 2 weeks...or sooner if your heart gives out on you?
Hospice came yesterday and that was the news they shared with us. We have totally switched from inhome nursing care to Hospice. The Hospice people have been incredible and don't sugarcoat anything, which is good and bad. Bad for those of us who think maybe a miracle will happen and all of the cancer will go away...and that is what we pray for everyday - and good for those who want the information to plan and to also prepare emotionally of life without her.
The thing that is so hard to comprehend is that she isn't going to get better. Sheilah is a fighter and has always gotten better. I keep thinking she will do the same thing this time...even though that isn't the case...
Hubby is really sick and is on antibiotics, Miss P is sick and I am worried about her, and I am feeling like sh*t because of my allergies and can't sleep well. It is a really hard time right now - I am putting all my efforts into taking care of P and being there for family...yet, I feel out of my mind because of allergy medicine and am probably just imagining I am doing any good at all. ha!

What I like to call "Sheilahisms"
Loving Disney and knowing the ins and outs of all the resorts.
"at what point in time"...insert something like "did that person think - hey, when I get up tomorrow morning I will wear that flowered skirt..and thought it was a good idea"
using hand to face gestures while talking
open mouth thought - when she is in the middle of finishing a thought her lips open ever so slightly and she looks down her nose. this is when you don't add your two cents, you just wait for her to finish her thought
calls herself an aging hippie
doesn't leave home without her jewelry.
dangly earrings - usually silver
love for geneology and has traced not only her family, but her daughter-in-laws'
loves coke...well loved because she can't drink it now
killer Lobster Thermadore
always thinks one step ahead - she is so great at thinking about how to make things better - even if it is trivial
giving - she is the most giving person I know - not only monetary, but emotionally
travel - she love (d) to travel. we sent her to Ireland in 2005 and she loved it. she got to see family that she still has over there.
crocheting - even though she says she does it backwards. she crocheted little blankets for the children in the cancer ward...again, thinking of others before herself. she said why should I complain when these children haven't even been able to live life and have this horrible disease.
pool, ocean, lake...she loves water
Catholic - and was always up-to-date on what the church was doing
loves politics
feminist to a point - men should treat women a certain way - she partially thinks all men are dogs....
manis and pedis - she took me to get my first pedi and pretty much all of them in between. those times were so much fun. for Corinna's wedding she took Nic and I get mani/pedi and our hair done - it was such a great day. of course - then I drank too much....stupid me
my daughter looks just like her - I call her "little Sheilah"
I will think of more....but this is what I have off the top of my head.

Say what is on your mind
So, hubby, Miss P and I are in Boston visiting Sheilah at the hospital for the weekend. It is incredibly difficult to see her. She is so weak and in so much pain. She is in and out of conciousness because of the cancer and the pain medication, and it makes it that much harder to be with her. Not because it is difficult for me, but because it is so awful to see her in so much pain and having to be bedridden. I look at her hoping she will get better and get back to "Sheilah," but the reality is that will never happen. I know that life is cyclical and that death is inevitable, but it certainly doesn't make easier to deal with when it is happening to someone you love so dearly.
I was praying for the right words to say when I got there. I didn't want to ignore the fact that she is sick, but I also wanted to be normal so it wasn't just about her cancer. My friend Kris visited P and I in the room, and I talked to her about this. She gave me some good advice, and that was to not just talk about the sickness but to talk about normal things because Sheilah probably wants to hear them. Kris has a few friends that are dealing with cancer and they don't want people just talking to them about their illness; that they want people to have "normal" conversations with them. Kris is the best - she always gives me great advice.
Well, hubby came to get P and I to visit Sheilah. I got to the room and it was dark. I was nervous to walk in - nervous to see her. And, when I leaned to kiss her I knocked a glass of ice cold water on her...uhmmmmm...I felt HORRIBLE. We had to change her sheets, her nightgown and mop the floor. Way to break the ice...haha. Not laughing. I was so embarressed and kept saying how sorry I was. Sheilah was such a trooper and just made a few sarcastic comments that made me feel a lot better - not just for what I had done, but because she had her wit. I love Sheilah's wit, and luckily hubby got it from her.
That visit I wanted to tell her the things I hope I get to say to her again. I told her I thought she was an amazing woman and that I loved her very, very much. I started to cry and she said to not get all emotional. I said I couldn't help it. I thought it was important for her to know last night how I felt about her. I am so, so sad that P won't get to know her wonderful, spectacular Nanna who cares more for other people than herself. I just feel lucky I got to know her and can share what a lovely person she was with P.

Dealing with cancer
Hubby's mom's health is really declining. She has been fighting ovarian cancer for about seven years and it is starting to get the best of her. I can't even write how sad I am. I feel totally helpless. MIL lives on the east coast and I live in the midwest, so it is difficult to get out there all the time...not to mention the expense. I would like to just stay out there for an extended time, but that isn't feasible with baby. Plus my dad is dealing with a heart problem here, so I can't just leave hubby and my family - what if something happened with my dad and I wasn't here?
It is such a depressing situation AND I feel like I am making excuses instead of doing something. I know she is surrounded by people who love her. I am concerned that they are in a little bit of denial. Noone wants a loved one to die, but we need to learn how to cope while their health is worsening. I have been talking to a hospice worker out there and she is wonderful. It hurts my heart and the pit of my stomach to even think about having the conversations in which the topic is MIL's passing. I am having a very difficult time dealing with it.
All I can do is pray for her to be comfortable and for God's will to be done. I don't think it is her death that is bothering me the most. I think it is the fact that all she can do is lay in bed or on the couch. Her quality of life is so poor and she is in constant back pain. She has bed sores and has to be on pain meds all the time. What the hell kind of life is that?

Florida
Miss P just had her first trip to Disney World. We went down for a week to visit Nana while she stayed in Kissimmee. Nana loves Disney World and even is a Vacation Club member. When she was feeling well she’d go to Disney two and sometimes three times a year. I can understand it because there is so much to do. Plus they keep the parks so clean and the employees are so nice. You really feel welcome and well taken care of when you are there.
My friend Kelly went down with me. She was a tremendous help. I really don’t know how women can travel alone with a baby – I guess you do what you have to do. The thing is, you don’t know how traveling by plane will effect the little one’s ears and schedule. Miss P had a major meltdown on the way down – for about three or four hours straight she screamed or whined. I felt so bad for her because I know she just wanted mommy to hold her, but I had too many things to carry and too many things to do to get us to our destination. It was awful.
BUT, she was fantastic the whole rest of trip and the flight home. She was so content at the parks watching people and looking at all of the colorful things. Disney does such a great job making the parks look magical and fun. I had to get her something from each park we went to. At the Magic Kingdom she really took to a “baby” version of Tigger, at MGM she LOVED Kermit in the Muppet Show, so I had to get her a Kermit. Then hubby went with Kelly to Epcot and got her a book from “America.” Oh, and my darling daughter rode Pirates of the Caribbean without even a whimper. I think it had a lot to do with the boys she was flirting with in line. There was a group of teenage boys behind us that thought the baby was cute and kept trying to get her to high five them. It was incredibly adorable.
The house we stayed in was at Sunset Lakes. It was a gated community and I think most of it is rental property. It is really pretty. Each house has a pool, hot tub, 4 bedrooms and 3 baths, a nice screened in back porch – and only about 7 minutes from all of Disney. We stayed with Nana and Aunt Mary. Aunt Mary was a very gracious host.
The lake behind the house had ducks and herons hanging out, and a sign told us that there were snake and alligators in there as well. Hence the screened porch everyone had. Obviously, you don’t want a visit from a one ton gator in your pool while you are trying to do your laps.

Subway
Last night when I went shopping for a suit I saw Subway and immediately told hubby that is what I wanted for dinner. I was craving a vege sub with a little bit of mayo...yum. Well, when we pulled into the nearest sub shop I noticed there was a guy in there with the biggest afro that was pulled out so it was super fly away. All I could thing of was that hair in my food and couldn't eat there. Hubby thought I was crazy, I thought I was saving myself from eating a hair. And who knows where that hair had been...
He didn't have a hairnet on. I am not crazy.

Swimming lessons
Miss P starts her swimming lessons on Saturday! Hubby is going to be in the water with her because I do not have a bathing suit. I have been looking all over the place, but since the midwest is currently considered in the season of winter there are no suits ANYWHERE. I even went to Dick's Sporting Goods and they only had a few sport suits. It is crazy!
Baby's suit came in the mail yesterday. I ordered it from kushies.com, the company that is well known for their cloth diaper products and adorable clothing. The suit is green with little daisies all over it. She looks absolutely precious in it. I can't wait to see what she does in the water.
It was hubby's idea to put her in swimming lessons and I think it is good that he is the one getting in the water with her. He grew up in RI on the water and he misses it. He really loves the water and basically says he feels complete when he is near it, whether we are on one of our rafting trips or hanging out by the pool at Disney. I'll be on the sidelines doing what I like to do: taking pictures and videos. Hubby gets mad at me sometimes because he feels I am missing the moment because I am too busy behind the lens...but, if I miss something I can always go back and look at it. I want to be sure I get plenty of pictures because as I mentioned before, I don't have enough to look at from my childhood (as a baby) and I feel kind of slighted.

New Excitement
So, there is something new that is intriguing hubby and I in our household...and boy is it good. Those with babies will totally understand and those without babies will think I have totally lost my sense of what is entertainment.
Miss P clapped her hands last night. After endless months of patty-cake and showing baby how to clap she finally did it herself. It was out of the blue and completely random. I was bouncing her on my yoga ball to hopefully calm her down and put her in a pre-slumber, and as she sat there babbling and looking at the dogs the hands came together. Oh glorious day. I was so excited I beamed and told hubby to watch his beautiful little girl do something we think is just a "thing" to get the dog's attention.
She just looked at us smiling as if she just layed a golden egg, and by the way we were acting you would have thought she did. In her little mind she probably had no idea what she even did to warrant such excitement from her parents. But, that was a belated Christmas gift that I think, besides my new laptop, was my favorite present.

Keeping baby clean
I have a baby that doesn't puke, spit up or drool too awfully bad, but keeping her clean is a constant job. Miss P is only 8 months old, so it isn't like she is out making dirt pies and eating mud...so why is it such a chore?
I was so embarressed taking her to the pediatrician the other day. She had been sick with a terrible cold and I needed to be sure she wasn't getting an ear infection. I didn't change her clothes before we left because I wanted her to be comfortable and warm in her sleeper. Well, when we got in the examining room I noticed the front of her sleeper was filthy. It had snot, food and medicine smears that I didn't even notice when we left the house! She was a mess. And, in that lighting I could see all the dried snot on her face that I didn't get when I washed her face. To add insult to injury the doctor put the little ear thingy in her ear to check for infection and he had to wipe all of the wax off the doohicky before he could see anything!aahhh! I thought I'd fall off the seat.
Then to top it off he had opened the sleeper to listen to her lungs. I am sure he is used to it, but watching him unsnap that germy, dirty sleeper front made me so uncomfortable. He probably thought we lived in a barn!
So, now after ever bath I wipe her ears out and make sure I got everything off her little face. I just didn't realize that babyfood and snot is like super glue when it hits the skin. ewwe.

Happy happy joy joy
It is hard to believe that 2006 is over. Many things have happened over the year which brought us much joy, but along with the happiness was sadness. And, that is okay – it’s life!
We were blessed last year with a healthy beautiful baby girl. She is the light of my life and makes my heart flutter when I think about her. She is such a special gift from God and I thank Him as often as I can for her presence in my life. Hubby and I are so lucky. She makes us smile, laugh and pull our hair out everyday. How could I have ever thought I didn’t want children?? I actually can’t wait to have #2. I could keep gushing over her, but I want to get on with my post.
I do, however, want to mention some of the things she is doing right now:
-She says: mamamama, dadada, brabrabrabra, vroom
-Blows spit bubbles and vibrates her lips together
-She eats 3 meals a day. She hates peas and green beans. She’ll eat peas if I put applesauce on the spoon with them but she will not eat green beans. Hey, the girl is eating spinach so what more can I ask? She also only likes rice cereal, unless it is oatmeal or barley in baby food.
-She sits like a champ, and rolls over ONLY when she feels like it
-She is standing well with support. I lowered her bed because my sis-in-law mentioned I should lower it because Miss P may be pulling herself up very soon. It would really suck if she pulled herself up in bed and flipped over the edge.
-She hands you her toys like she is sharing them. She looks at you like she wants you to take it. I always take it and say thank you and tell her how much I love it. Haha!
My brother and his wife had a baby girl in August. She is just as precious as the older three. I can’t believe my brother has four….yes, FOUR children. He always wanted a big family, though. I think the youngest boy is having a hard time finding where he fits in. I think he was the baby and got a lot of attention and now he has to share with the new baby. He is very good with his sister, but you can tell by his orneriness that he is trying to adjust.
My dad was diagnosed in June with cardio myopathy. He was dealing with it for a while and we didn’t even know it. We thought it was asthma, but some very good observations by my mom and sharing those observations with the doctor saved his life. He wasn’t able to increase the Coreg he was taking so he had to get a defibrillator put in. He was going to wait until January but luckily he had it put in 6 days before Christmas because 3 days before Christmas he had 2 heart attacks….and that device saved his life.
My mother-in-law has been dealing with ovarian cancer for over 6 years. This year her health has really declined because of all of the chemo. It is awful that the treatment is worse than the disease, but if it wasn’t for the chemo and the clinical trials she was a part of she wouldn’t be here with us today. We are very blessed to have her with us. I feel so sad that she is so far away and in bad health. Right now she is in the hospital for dehydration. She has been having trouble eating – basically really bad heartburn and now she is having trouble even keeping food down. This is one strong woman and quite a fighter. She is one of the best people I know.
My husband, last but certainly not least, got a terrific job. He is working for a Fortune 500 company as their Internet and Brand Manager. He actually got a higher title and a nice raise after only two months of working there. He is a good man Charlie Brown. He is an amazing individual and to think my daughter will get some of his qualities makes me ecstatic. He is my best friend and confidant. I don’t know what I would do without him.
Happy New Year 2007. I’ll be thinking about my resolutions today…I prefer to call them goals or life changes. Have a happy and a healthy.
